Preventive Services
The best way to catch tooth decay and other potentially damaging dental issues is through regular preventive dentistry care. The American Dental Association suggests going to the dentist twice a year for preventive care including check-ups and cleaning.
Regular dental visits help prevent gum disease, cavities, and other oral health issues. The earlier dental conditions can be treated, the easier treatment is likely to be. At Rachel Barnhart DDS, we treat a variety of dental and airway issues and can help you maintain the health and aesthetics of your smile.
Teeth Cleaning
Over time, consuming certain foods and drinks can stain the teeth, and the natural buildup of plaque can lead to decreased tooth health and bad breath. By getting a regular dental cleaning every six months, both the health and aesthetics of your smile are maintained. Teeth cleaning can also help prevent cavities, gingivitis, and other serious dental issues such as tooth loss.
Although twice a year is typically recommended to maintain oral hygiene, more advanced cases of decreased oral health may require more regular cleaning.
SDF Treatment
Silver Diamine Fluoride, or SDF, is an antimicrobial liquid that can help prevent tooth decay and reduce tooth sensitivity. This treatment is quick and does not require numbing, which can be helpful for young or anxious patients.
SDF requires only two treatment sessions and although it’s helpful in preventing further decay in smaller cavities, SDF does not take the place of fillings or crowns to treat tooth function or aesthetics.
Additionally, SDF treatment is covered by most insurances and can also be used in conjunction with sealants for added tooth protection.
What Can You Expect During Your Check-Up?
During your visit, Dr. Barnhart will do an initial exam of your mouth and take any necessary x-rays of your teeth. These will help identify any hidden decay, cavities, jaw, or tooth problems. We will also examine your teeth, tongue, bite, gums, and mouth to look for any potential or existing issues.
After doing a thorough exam, Dr. Barnhart and her team will work with you to create a long-term treatment plan to maintain the health and aesthetics of your teeth. Dr. Barnhart also specializes in airway-focused dentistry and can diagnose and treat airway-related breathing or sleep issues.
